Surf in the City

Look Mom, I’m surfing on the slide!

It was a nice reminder – even standard playground equipment can be used in unexpected ways. I get it that there are times when playground ‘rules’ should be followed more closely (like when there are many children trying to use the slide), but encouraging some outside-the-box thinking when the area isn’t busy can be empowering and fun!

What are your favorite playground variations?

  1. I do love the classic climb up the slide… I think it’s great for those gross motor skills (although, we only do that in our own backyard or when there are no other kids at the playground). My girls also love to swing on their stomach… it’s a great way to pretend like you’re flying! πŸ™‚

    • I agree about climbing up slides Terri! Swing flying sounds great too – gotta find a swing tall enough for me too πŸ™‚

  2. I want to try that move the next time I’m at the park!!

My S loves running UP the slide–I think most kids do. I think the slide is where most playground “offenses” ; ) happen…or maybe it’s the swings?

Yes, I agree, there are different “rules” one enforces at the park, depending on how busy!

    • His surfing made me think of yoga poses too πŸ™‚

I was thinking about how adults jump in quickly to enforce slide rules (myself included), and how allowing kids to negotiate more could be good. Tough though, when you don’t know all of the kids and parents on the playground…
